Cancer Rehabilitation Program

Cancer and the treatments for cancer affect patients in many different ways. The surgery can limit mobility and strength. Chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments may also leave the patient fatigued and lacking energy. However, Martha Jefferson has the necessary resources to get our patients through this difficult time.

The Martha Jefferson Physical and Occupational Therapy departments provide a comprehensive cancer rehabilitation program. We provide the following services:

  • Pre-op consult and educational sessions to take measurements and provide instruction in post-op exercises
  • Post-op breast cancer rehab, including a progression of shoulder range of motion exercises and strength. (It is necessary to reach overhead to undergo radiation treatment.)
  • Post-op exercises for any patient having difficulty returning to their pre-op mobility levels.
  • Scar mobility and soft tissue massage to relieve (healed) painful scars and tissue that can limit the shoulder's range of motion.
  • Exercise plans for patients suffering from fatigue and weakness. Studies show that regular, gentle exercise actually helps patients tolerate their cancer treatments and increases their energy levels.
  • Lymphedema education for patients who have undergone a lymph node dissection.
  • Lymphedema treatment for patients who show signs of swelling.
