Driving Directions

From US Interstate 64 East and West:

Take the Shadwell Exit (Number 124), and turn west on Route 250. Turn at the stoplight at Peter Jefferson Parkway. At the top of the hill, go straight into the hospital parking lots. The entrance to the hospital-based emergency department is around to the left. You can get into either the main entrance or the ED entrance through the parking garage.


From Route 29 South:

Travel north on Route 29, which becomes Route 250/29 Bypass. Turn at the stoplight at Peter Jefferson Parkway. At the top of the hill, go straight into the hospital parking lots.

From Route 29 North:

Travel south on Route 29 and exit onto the 250 East Bypass. Turn at the stoplight at Peter Jefferson Parkway. At the top of the hill, go straight into the hospital parking lots.

From Route 250 East or West:

Turn at the stoplight at Peter Jefferson Parkway. At the top of the hill, go straight into the hospital parking lots.

Driving Directions

From I-64

When traveling on I-64, take exit 118 onto Route 29 North, towards the Charlottesville Airport. Stay on 29 North for about 10 miles until you reach Proffit Road, following the intersection at Timberwood Boulevard. Take a right onto Proffit Road, and Martha Jefferson Hospital Health Services will be immediately on your left.

From Route 29 South

Traveling North on Route 29 near the Charlottesville Airport, take the right onto Proffit Road, following Timberwood Boulevard. Martha Jefferson Hospital Health Services will be immediately on your left.

From Route 29 North

Traveling South on Route 29, you will come to an intersection with Airport Road to your right and Proffit Road on your left. Take a left onto Proffit Road, and Martha Jefferson Hospital Health Services will be immediately on your left.

What is a freestanding emergency room?

not located on a hospital campus. Martha Jefferson Emergency Department at Proffit Rd. provides access to the same emergency-trained medical personnel and diagnostic imaging and lab services available in Martha Jefferson’s hospital-based emergency room. No appointment is required to be seen at the facility. Should a patient need to be admitted to the hospital, an ambulance is on campus to immediately transport a patient for direct admission.

How is Martha Jefferson Emergency Department at Proffit Rd. different from an urgent care center?

The Emergency Department at Proffit Rd. is open 24 hours per day, seven days a week, whereas most urgent care centers are only open for a portion of the day and generally not on Sundays. Martha Jefferson Emergency Department is also capable of treating a wider range of urgent and emergent medical conditions, including respiratory distress, head injuries, abdominal pain, dehydration, orthopedic injuries (fractures), sports injuries and lacerations (cuts requiring sutures). These conditions are beyond the scope of treatment for most urgent care centers.

How is the Emergency Department at Proffit Rd. different from a hospital-based emergency room?

Our emergency department at Proffit Rd. provides the same emergency treatment patients receive in our traditional hospital based emergency rooms. It accepts ambulances and walk-in patients, and both have streamlined processes to minimize wait time. Both our hospital-based department and our freestanding ED provide convenient, comfortable surroundings while administering the utmost in quality care.

What am I required to pay?

Patients whose insurance plans treat Martha Jefferson Hospital services as in-network are required to pay the emergency room co-pay as designated by the insurance plan at the time of service. As with any visit to an emergency room, upon receipt of the explanation of benefits (EOB) from the insurance carrier, patients may also be required to pay a deductible or any co-insurance if it is determined to be patient responsibility by the insurance provider.

What if I have to be admitted to a hospital?

Insurance companies or the patient will be billed for the transport consistent with stabilization and transfer from any hospital Emergency Department.
