Nursing Mission & Vision

Our Mission

The mission of Martha Jefferson's nurses is to promote physical, spiritual and emotional well-being in Charlottesville and the surrounding communities; to share the job of birth; to heal the sick and injured, and to offer heartfelt care to the dying.

This mission is realized through:

  • Our patient and family-centered care model that incorporates the organization's commitment to Planetree philosophies.
  • Our professional practice model, actualized through a well-developed model of shared decision-making and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.

Nursing’s involvement in all aspects of the design of an evidence-based, state of the art hospital (opened in August 2011), demonstrates our commitment to the development of care delivery processes that will ensure the care we provide is as excellent as the facility we are practicing in.

Our Vision

The vision of Martha Jefferson nurses is to become leaders in professional nursing practice. We are achieving our vision through:

  • Our commitment to an environment that supports Magnet recognition
  • Our involvement and leadership in professional organizations
  • Organizational support for—and nursing involvement in—the creation of electronic documentation systems that promote patient safety and quality, and facilitate collaboration and communication across the continuum of care
  • An organizational and departmental commitment to professional develop and life-long learning, as demonstrated by our Institute for Workplace Learning, our status as an approved provider of Continuing Education through the Virginia Nurses Association, generous scholarship and tuition reimbursement, our commitment to a baccalaureate prepared nursing workforce, promotion of professional certification, and a dedicated Department of Nursing Education.
