Innovative Initiatives

Our warm and friendly community hospital rivals top cancer centers in its sophisticated treatment options and technology, from Electronic Medical Records to Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) for brain tumors. The technology and treatments offered at Martha Jefferson Hospital are those you'd expect at a world-class facility, but might be surprising to find at a typical community hospital.

Though the technology is impressive, it would mean little without the skill and experience of our entire team, from our diagnostic specialists to our board-certified surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. The interaction between team and technology is what makes us who we are—the community's choice for excellence in healthcare.

Some of our recent innovative initiatives include:

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

In June of 2009, Martha Jefferson Hospital first utilized its recently installed Trilogy® Stereotactic linear accelerator at Martha Jefferson Hospital to deliver Radiosurgery. This treatment combines the Trilogy's® unique high-output Stereotactic beam with cutting edge Radionics® components, advanced treatment planning software and the most rigorous quality assurance protocols to maximize targeting accuracy, patient safety and comfort.

Trilogy®-based Stereotactic Radiosurgery for brain tumors is just one more tool in the extensive array of advanced Radiation Oncology techniques already available at Martha Jefferson Hospital including: Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy, Image Guided Radiotherapy, IMRT, breast and prostate brachytherapy, as well as the only respiratory gated breast radiotherapy treatment program in central Virginia.

64-Slice CT Angiography

The improved resolution of CTA over the last several years, as well as faster imaging with the new 64-slice scanners, has even made non-invasive evaluation of the coronary arteries possible. Martha Jefferson offers this capability with our 64-Slice LightSpeed VCT from GE. The use of cardiac ECG gating during the study to reconstruct multiple sets of imaging data in different phases of the cardiac cycle is helpful to be able to visualize all segments of the coronary arteries.

Electronic Medical Records

Encouraging innovation and advances in technology, Martha Jefferson has been offering an electronic health record to physicians since 2005. This system has a comprehensive lab interface, certified electronic prescribing, and voice recognition software for ease of clinical documentation. We continue to advance the capabilities we provide within the system to demonstrate our ongoing promise to patient safety and clinical excellence.
